馬の蹄(蹄負面)に装着して蹄を保護する人の靴に相当するものである。競走馬では、調教時と競走時に頻繁に打ち換える必要のない兼用蹄鉄と呼ばれるアルミニウム合金製のものが使用されているが、乗馬では鉄製のものもよく使われている。
